African American History Challenge Bowl
The 100 Black Men of Madison African-American History Challenge Bowl is an educational program designed to enhance the study of African American history. The Challenge Bowl is open to all Madison area students with the goal to encourage pride, self-worth and an appreciation of the African American legacy and culture. It is also a challenging and fun way for students to expand their knowledge of African-American History in highly competitive local and national competitions.
The chief authorities for the African American History Challenge bowl are the sixth revised edition of "Before the Mayflower" by Lerone Bennett, Jr. and "The Negro in the Making of America" by Benjamin Quarles. This one-of-a-kind academic contest consists of two divisions with a senior (high school) and junior (middle school) competition. Each school is allowed to enter one team consisting of three members including an alternate. Teams are bracketed and compete against teams from other Madison area schools through four rounds of questioning until a champion is chosen for each division.
All participating students are awarded medals of merit acknowledging their achievement and participation. The second and third place finishers receive trophies and awards. The local first-place winner’s school earn the right to host 100 Black Men of Madison traveling championship trophy and team members receive individual trophies, an award and an expense paid trip to compete in the annual 100 Black Men of America, Inc national African American History Challenge Bowl. The winners of the national competition receive additional accolades, trophies and awards.
The 100 Black Men of Madison Inc. are proud to partner with the Madison Metropolitan School District in conducting this program. This 16-year partnership has produced two Madison, national 100 Black Men of America African American History Challenge Bowl champions at the junior division.

Contributing to the picnic atmosphere are hotdogs and hamburgers (provided by local businesses) grilled on site by members of the organization.
The event has become increasingly popular as the 100 Black Men of Madison continue to assist Dane County students achieve academic excellence. Come on out and join us in August for this years event at Demetral Park.
Mentoring
The purpose of the 100 Black Men of Madison Mentoring/Tutor Program is to promote academic achievement and success. To accomplish this goal, we work toward sustaining an ongoing relationship between young and adult males, striving toward improved academic performance, as well as providing and engaging youth in positive activities with responsible adult males.
Our aim is to provide learning experiences that promote education, reduce or eliminate contact with the juvenile justice system, and prepare young men to accept leadership responsibilities within their families and community. This program is conducted in collaboration with the Madison Metropolitan School District and Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Dane County.
Adoption of Orchard Ridge Elementary School
Program Information
As a logical stage of development, the 100 Black Men of Madison, Inc. (the 100), in conjunction with the African American Communication and Collaboration Council (AACCC), has established a number of community projects for 2011. This effort will focus the wisdom and energy of its corresponding constituent groups toward areas in need of positive outcomes. The projects are designed to serve as a demonstration of what can be accomplished when the "talent" of the community is focused on solutions rather than symptoms.
Education
The first educational pilot project is the "adoption” of Orchard Ridge Elementary (ORE) School for the first six months of 2011 (second semester of 2010/2011 school year).
After assessing the primary issues and unmet needs concerning student achievement, the 100, AACCC, the ORE School Principal and Central Office MMSD administration (including the Superintendent) have determined a number of vital activities in which the 100 and AACCC could play a vital role.
Too much is at stake for the adoption of Orchard Ridge Elementary to be viewed as a “feel good” project. The student population of ORE involves 56% students of color, and fifty five percent (55%) of its student enrollment is from low-income homes. As dramatically depicted below, approximately two thirds of that population cannot read.

Involvement in this project is not an option, but an obligation. We can and must turn this around. Also note, unlike many volunteer efforts, measurement before and after engagement will occur.
This project has been designed to address issues that are impairing the school from achieving optimal performance and results for our children. Please review the following and strongly consider serving as a volunteer resource and solution.
